test during pregnancy

My wife went in today for a Glucose Tolerance test today and is at 29 1/2 weeks gestation. They had her drink sugar water and wait about an hour before they drew two vials of blood. She has a terrible upset stomach ever since. She describes the pain as “gut rot.” We are not sure if this could have something to do with the sugar concentration that she had to drink reacting with her body. She is just in a lot of pain. Any ideas?

Well each person reacts to the test differently. I didn’t have any problems, but did your wife happen to mention if baby had been moving alot? After I took my test, my little boy acted like he was on speed and couldn’t settle down. My stomach kind of hurt because of all of the movement. Other than that, I’m not really sure what could be wrong with her. Maybe she should call her doctor. And in the meantime, have her take it easy. And if she has to take anything for pain, make sure it’s just Tylenol.

Its pretty normal to feel that way. I had to do the 1 hour and 3 hour testing and after both of them I just wanted to hurl, I felt really shakey.

Even though I didnt feel up to it, I ate after doing the tests and it made me feel a bit better. Eat something thats low in sugar though and dont drink any caffine for awhile.

The glucose drink is a sugar syrup of sorts. Done correctly, you have an empty stomach when you drink it. A side effect is an upset tummy. Its normal to have the upset tummy most of the day. Bland foods, milk and crackers, and gingeral help. I had my 3 hour test this am and I came home so sick I threw up and took a 4 hour nap. Good luck. The end result is worth it.
