I just asked a Q about refusing blood tests, i’m not scared of getting it done, i just faint and feel/be sick afterwards, i really don’t know why! It’s something to do with veins i suppose but i’ve allowed it to be done before. So how many blood tests will you need during pregnancy? I’ve heard you need about 4-8 but you can get only 3 if you’re petrified, although i’m not petrified i’m just not into fainting whilst being pregnant.
Also why do u get a IV drip when you’re in labor?
Sorry i’m clueless

I always count my pokes. with both my kids I got 8 shots and that included the IV and the epidural.
The IV is to keep your body hydrated since you cant eat or drink while in labor. But I think 8 pokes is the minimum because if your diabetes test fails, you have to get more shots, and if you get put on more meds during labor, that can be more shots.
I’ve had blood drawn 3 times but they have taken about 9 tubes all together. They keep you hydrated during labor also you then have an IV in case you need an emergency C section or some medication quickly.
The IV is for fluid and the possibility of needing IV medication. It is also put in for emergencies. The blood test is only one needlestick with a couple of vials drawn. The amount blood equals about a shot glass. Just tell the person drawing your blood before hand and they can have your lie down before hand. Make sure you have someone else there to drive you and eat a meal before you go. Remember these tests are to identify problems with your health or your baby sooner than later
Ok..I am one of those people who feel faint and sick during and after blood tests and I regularly donate blood too! Here are some suggestions that have helped me.
Drink plenty of fluids about 45 minutes or more before a blood draw. The more fluid in your system, the easier it is to find a vein and get the needed blood. Have them put the little rubber thing (tourniquet-like) on your upper arm, not near your elbow. I don’t know why the elbow thing is taught. It is not an improvement and it makes me nausea as well. Ask for someone with more experience. Let someone else who has less problem with blood draws deal with the less experienced person. Have a COLD washcloth, or freezer bag or something and place it around the back of your neck. Really helps. Don’t look at the needle at all. Just look away and let them do their thing. Hope these help.
Unless you have complications, they normally draw blood the 1st prenatal, then again around week 28 and then sometimes towards the end of pregnancy. If you have complications, they may draw blood every time. There are a couple of tests that may be done during the 2nd or 3rd prenatal.
i had aroun 6 lots of bloods but no iv where i live they only do one of them if you have a c-section or need anitbiotics during labour
